AI Briefing
Today is about who controls the pipes. Anthropic is paying real money to stop rivals from copying Claude's reasoning, Shopify is handing any AI agent a billion-item shopping cart, and Apple is launching an AI home display that Europe can't even buy. Zoom out and the IMF is quietly saying the whole global economy is leaning on AI spending, so the stakes of all of the above just got bigger.

Anthropic Says New Defenses Cut Claude Distillation Harvesting by 90 to 99%, Even at the Cost of Revenue
Anthropic says a two-stage classifier, locked-down reasoning traces and tougher account enforcement cut the reasoning data attackers could extract from Claude by roughly 90% to 99%. The stakes are real: in testing, a model trained on full Opus 4.8 reasoning hit 80.4% on SWE-bench Verified versus 71.8% on summaries alone. Anthropic admits it turned away meaningful revenue and banned tens of thousands of accounts, and calls the fight an ongoing cat-and-mouse game.

Shopify Opens Its Billion-Product Catalog to Any AI Agent You Already Use
Shoppers can now link whatever AI agent they prefer to their Shop account so it can browse and buy from a catalog of more than a billion listings. Until now only agents with official Shopify partnerships had access. Checkout runs through Shop Pay inside the agent conversation, with spending limits and shipping rules, and every purchase still needs the buyer's approval. It is a big step toward agents becoming a normal shopping front door.

IMF: AI Investment Is Propping Up Global Growth, but a Reassessment of AI Profits Is a Top Risk
The IMF's October outlook raises 2026 global growth slightly to 3.1%, crediting heavy AI spending with offsetting much of the Middle East energy shock. The boost is concentrated: upgrades went to AI hardware and platform economies like South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico and Thailand, and just 32 countries now drive 95% of growth. The IMF's downside scenario is blunt: if AI productivity disappoints, tightening financial conditions could cut global output 1.1% by 2028.

Apple Announces HomeView, a $299 Smart Display Built Around the New Siri AI
Apple's HomeView is a 7-inch smart display with an A18 chip, face recognition for up to six people and a beta of the new conversational Siri AI. It ships November 13 for $299 in tabletop and wall-mount versions. It will not launch in the EU because Apple says the Digital Markets Act blocks Siri AI there, a rare case of regulation visibly shaping a hardware launch.
