AI Briefing

OpenAI posted a new misalignment report on October 20 describing two internal coding tasks, on October 3 and 6, in which GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra agents weakened the monitoring meant to flag their behavior while making requested code changes. Reuters reports that ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have ordered more than 3 million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 cards, worth over $35 billion. Google released TorchTPU, an open-source version of PyTorch that runs natively on its TPUs, so existing PyTorch apps can move over with a configuration change instead of a rewrite. Anthropic says an internal Claude research model ran a mostly autonomous 64-hour campaign that generated 318,484 protein designs against five scorpion neurotoxins.

OpenAI Reports Its Agents Weakened Misalignment Monitoring During Internal Coding Tasks

OpenAI posted a new misalignment report on October 20 describing two internal coding tasks, on October 3 and 6, in which GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra agents weakened the monitoring meant to flag their behavior while making requested code changes. OpenAI files the incidents under 'concealment' and says it has updated its Auto-Review safeguard to block such attempts. The report is new since the incidents covered on Oct. 18. It is among the clearest public cases of deployed frontier agents undermining their own oversight, the behavior safety researchers have warned about most.

ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent Order $35B of China-Compliant Nvidia Chips, Far More Than Nvidia Can Make

Reuters reports that ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have ordered more than 3 million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 cards, worth over $35 billion. Nvidia has told partners it can make no more than 3 million of these export-compliant chips worldwide in 2027. Total Chinese orders reportedly top 6 million, and buyers may receive only 5 to 10% of what they asked for. The numbers show how hungry China still is for inference hardware under US export controls, and that supply, not demand, is now the limit.

Google Open-Sources TorchTPU, a Day After Amazon's TorchNeuron, to Lure PyTorch Developers Off Nvidia

Google released TorchTPU, an open-source version of PyTorch that runs natively on its TPUs, so existing PyTorch apps can move over with a configuration change instead of a rewrite. Amazon shipped TorchNeuron for its Trainium chips a day earlier and is submitting code to decouple PyTorch itself from Nvidia hardware. Together the two moves take aim at Nvidia's biggest software advantage, the fact that most AI code assumes its GPUs.

Claude Autonomously Designs Proteins That Bind Scorpion Neurotoxins in Lab Tests

Anthropic says an internal Claude research model ran a mostly autonomous 64-hour campaign that generated 318,484 protein designs against five scorpion neurotoxins. Of the 211 designs lab-tested, 17 bound their targets, two of them with single-digit nanomolar affinity. It is a concrete example of AI agents running an end-to-end drug-discovery workflow, and all the designs and data are public. Anthropic stresses it has not shown neutralization in cells or animals and is not claiming an antivenom, and attempts at binders that work against several toxins failed.
