OpenAI Says Its Agents Found and Built Root Exploits for 948 Linux Kernel Flaws in One Run, for About $1.2M
OpenAI says an autonomous pipeline of agents, running an unreleased "upcoming cyber model," found 948 distinct Linux kernel privilege-escalation vulnerabilities, wrote working root exploits for them and drafted patches in a single mid-October run that cost $1,213,430 in API credits. According to OpenAI's report, the pipeline reproduced 1,724 of 2,308 candidate findings and produced 1,169 working exploits, which variant analysis reduced to 948 distinct bugs. In a sample of 166 exploits, the agents used 10 techniques that the outside kernel experts OpenAI consulted had not seen before. Defenders have to plan for bug-finding at this scale and cost. OpenAI says human researchers reviewed the results before hundreds of reports and patches went to Linux maintainers.
Voters Sided Against Data Centers in 40 of 41 Local Midterm Ballot Measures
In Tuesday's midterms, voters opposed data centers in every one of 41 local ballot measures in 10 states except one, in Harwood, North Dakota, CNBC reports. Ohio held 21 of the measures. In a CNBC voter poll, 56% of voters said data centers were a crucial or major factor in their vote. The results turn the AI infrastructure buildout into a clear local political liability just as the hyperscalers are committing record capital spending.
Texas Elects a Governor Who Promised an Immediate Data Center Moratorium, and Data Center Stocks Fall
Democrat Gina Hinojosa unseated Texas Gov. Greg Abbott after campaigning on an immediate moratorium on data centers in the state. Wells Fargo estimates Texas holds 27% of planned US data center gigawatts. On Wednesday morning CoreWeave and Iren each fell about 4%, while Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet rose. The result threatens the region that had become the center of the AI data center buildout.
China Blocks SoftBank's $5.4B Purchase of ABB's Robotics Unit
China has refused to approve SoftBank's $5.4 billion acquisition of ABB's robotics division through its foreign investment security review, according to the Financial Times, and ABB has confirmed the block. Reports say Chinese officials worried that robotics data could leave the country and be used to train AI models, including those of OpenAI, in which SoftBank is a major investor. China accounts for about 30% of ABB's robotics business, so the decision sets back SoftBank's push into physical AI. SoftBank shares fell about 7% in Tokyo.
Apple Cuts Engineers' Daily AI Spending Cap From $300 to $200, With Deeper Cuts Planned
Apple cut the daily AI spending cap for its engineering teams from $300 to $200 in October and plans further cuts, with some allowances dropping to $100 a day, Bloomberg reports. Outside engineering, Apple is reportedly considering a cap as low as $25 a day. Like Goldman Sachs's recent cutbacks, the move suggests large companies are moving from "use as much AI as possible" to rationing tokens once the bills arrive.
Uber Says Only Four Rides Were Booked Through AI Agents in Its Busiest Week
Uber said on its Q3 earnings call that only four rides were ordered through an AI agent during its busiest week in October. In that same week, 500 Uber Eats orders came through agents, out of about 320 million trips and orders overall. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi called agent traction "very, very early and very limited." DoorDash reported similarly tiny numbers the week before, so consumer use of AI agents for transactions remains negligible despite heavy industry promotion.
