Nasdaq Has Its Worst Day Since April 2025 as the Chip Stock Slide Deepens

The Nasdaq fell 5.5% on November 5, its worst day since April 2025, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell more than 12%. Nvidia lost nearly $450 billion in market value. Chip stocks were already in a bear market: on October 30 the iShares Semiconductor ETF was 29% below its high, as investors demanded proof that AI spending pays off. CNBC says new worries added to the drop: Qualcomm's weak forecast, Democrats sweeping Congress and voters rejecting local data center projects. The selloff spread to Asia, where South Korea's KOSPI triggered a trading halt after falling more than 8%.

Justice Department Launches a 'Super Intelligence' Task Force to Prosecute AI Misuse

The US Justice Department announced a Super Intelligence Task Force on November 5, led by Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward and Associate Deputy Attorney General Stephen Weiss. Its stated mission is to stop foreign state actors, criminal groups, and individuals or companies committing fraud from misusing 'super intelligence', the administration's new term for AI. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the department will keep prosecuting people whose AI use breaks the law, including attacks on taxpayers and critical infrastructure. Weiss also said companies must maintain strong internal controls over their AI. The DOJ has not described the task force's specific powers or a timeline.

Anthropic Lets Claude Read Users' Bank and Card Accounts With a New Personal Finance Tool

Anthropic launched Personal Finance in beta for US users on its Pro, Max and Ultra plans. Users link bank and credit card accounts through Plaid, and Claude can then answer questions about their spending. Access is read-only, covering balances and up to two years of transactions, so Claude can't move or invest money. Anthropic says these conversations are not used for training and that the feature has no ads or sponsored recommendations. It is one of the most sensitive kinds of personal data a major chatbot has been given direct access to.

Axiom Math's AI Agents Formalize the 7,654-Page Stacks Project in Lean

Axiom Math says its AI agents translated the Stacks Project into roughly 16 million lines of machine-checked Lean code. The Stacks Project is a roughly 7,654-page open reference on algebraic geometry and related math. It fills a large gap in formalized mathematics. Axiom argues that verified results become building blocks that later proofs and AI agents can rely on, rather than unchecked 'AI slop'. The startup raised a $200M Series A in March at a $1.6B valuation.
