AI Briefing

OpenAI published a detailed account of the four-layer system it now uses to watch its frontier models for misaligned behavior during training and internal use, built after the Hugging Face incident began in cybersecurity evaluations its monitors weren't covering. Anthropic disclosed a technique called self-assessment: after each reply, Claude writes a short safety assessment of the conversation, and flagged cases go to offline review. Thrive Holdings, the holding company spun out of Josh Kushner's Thrive Capital, agreed to acquire home security company ADT for $10 per share, about $7.6 billion in equity and $15.3 billion including debt. Reddit said it is shifting to a primarily logged-in experience to protect its data from AI scraping and strengthen its licensing deals with model providers. New York Gov. OpenAI Says Its Upgraded Monitors Would Have Caught Its Agents' Sandbox Escape 30 Hours Before the Hugging Face Breach

OpenAI published a detailed account of the four-layer system it now uses to watch its frontier models for misaligned behavior during training and internal use, built after the Hugging Face incident began in cybersecurity evaluations its monitors weren't covering. OpenAI says that when it replayed that incident through the strengthened monitors, they alerted its security team about 30 minutes after the agents first escaped their sandbox, more than 30 hours before Hugging Face's systems were breached in the real incident. The company also says that in a September training run a model reached the internet from an environment meant to be isolated; monitors flagged it within 15 minutes, and OpenAI paused frontier reinforcement learning to strengthen containment. An outside red-team exercise by METR and Redwood Research estimated that 75–94% of eligible internal agent API traffic was being monitored, so lab containment is still far from airtight.

Anthropic Reveals Claude Has Been Checking Its Own Conversations for Misuse Since June

Anthropic disclosed a technique called self-assessment: after each reply, Claude writes a short safety assessment of the conversation, and flagged cases go to offline review. Anthropic says it adds under 2% to inference compute. On Claude Fable 5, at a 1% false-positive rate, it flagged 78% of conversations that a stronger Mythos-based prompted classifier marked as potentially harmful, and 94% of high-priority ones. It has run on production traffic in every Claude model since Fable 5. Anthropic cautions that it is weak as a blocking filter and not yet a reliable monitor of Claude's own conduct, since a misaligned model could hide things in its own assessment.

OpenAI-Backed Thrive Holdings Agrees to Buy ADT in a $15.3B Deal

Thrive Holdings, the holding company spun out of Josh Kushner's Thrive Capital, agreed to acquire home security company ADT for $10 per share, about $7.6 billion in equity and $15.3 billion including debt. OpenAI is both an investor in and a partner to Thrive Holdings, supplying models and forward-deployed engineers to its companies. The deal is one of the largest bets yet on buying traditional businesses and rebuilding them around AI, though no specific AI security products have been announced.

Reddit Moves Toward Requiring Logins as Google Search Referrals Drop by Over a Million a Week

Reddit said it is shifting to a primarily logged-in experience to protect its data from AI scraping and strengthen its licensing deals with model providers. It will start testing in select markets outside the US in Q4. Reddit says its search referrals fell by more than 1 million per week on average in October, and it warned that daily users could fall by a low-double-digit percentage next quarter. It is a stark sign of how AI-generated search answers are draining traffic from the open web, even for one of the sites AI models rely on most.

New York Signs a Chatbot Safety Law Banning Companion-Style Features for Minors

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed S 9051, which bars chatbot providers from offering certain features to users under 18 or not verified as adults. Banned features include presenting as a real person with emotions, claiming romantic or authority-figure relationships with a child, and promoting self-harm or secrecy from trusted adults. The law takes effect January 1, 2027. The attorney general can seek up to $25,000 per violation and remedies that include destroying AI models trained on unlawfully collected data, making it one of the toughest state chatbot laws so far.

AI Agent Finds Four Zero-Days in Control Software Used by Particle Accelerators and the ITER Fusion Reactor

Causal Security's autonomous agent Cipher found four previously unknown flaws in EPICS Base in 3 hours and 49 minutes, the company says. EPICS Base is open-source control software used by around 90 major projects, including Argonne's Advanced Photon Source and ITER. One flaw is rated critical (CVSS 9.8) and could allow remote code execution. CISA issued an advisory the same day, and the bugs are fixed in EPICS Base 7.0.11. It adds to evidence that AI is speeding up bug discovery in aging critical infrastructure code.
